TCM Herbal Story

Fresh Ginger (Rhizoma Zingiberis recens; Sheng Jiang)

One day, when Shennong was collecting herbs, he accidentally took in a poisonous mushroom and fainted due to pain.  He regained consciousness after a while and found that the place he was lying had a cluster of green plants with pointed leaves.  He noticed that the plant possessed a very strong aroma, and felt very refreshing after smelling it.  Shenong believed that he was woken up by this plant, so he took some of its tuber and started chewing.  His stomach began growling which then leaded to diarrhea.

However, Shennong felt relieved from the pain afterwards and decided to give a name to this herb for its magical role.  Since “Jiang” was Shenong’s last name, he named this herb “Sheng Jiang”, meaning bringing him back to life.
