You may have noticed photos of number of athletes, including one of the most decorated Olympian of all time- Michael Phelps with big, dark, purplish red circles on their backs and shoulders surface on the internet during the Olympic games. These perfectly round shapes are the result of one of the TCM practices known as “cupping”.

According to the concept of TCM, the idea of it is to help regulate the flow of energy – known as qi around the body and find the balance between Yin and Yang. Known to be one of the world’s oldest forms of medicine, TCM has been practiced for over 2500 years. Its rich essence of Chinese history, philosophy and medical knowledge has gained worldwide interest in using natural products, even more so recognized as a viable form of alternative medicine in some parts of the world.

Yin and Yang refers to two opposing yet interdependent forces.
  • Yin (陰): dark, night, cold, feminine, negative
  • Yang (陽): light, day, warm, male, positive

The perspective of TCM believes that the balance of yin and yang is what makes you feel healthy and well; even if one force dominates the other, pain and illness may arise. The foundation of a healthy individual not only has a healthy mind and body, it also includes one’s emotions, thoughts and psychological state. For these reasons, TCM does not focus on treating the illness alone, but rather the person with the illness.

Differences Between Scientific Chinese Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine

You recently visited the TCM practitioner and were prescribed with modern medicine-like capsules, pills or granules. You thought to yourself, where does scientific Chinese medicine lie between traditional Chinese herbs or herbal decoctions in terms of its efficacy?

Scientific Chinese medicine is a fusion of modern science technologies used to verify the medicinal and therapeutic values of Chinese herbal compounds. Firstly, the raw materials undergo separation, concentration, granulation followed by fluidized bed drying and spray drying before turning into granules, tablets, and capsules. Not only that this process can help to retain the active components, it also helps to ensure the quality of the product by preventing the growth of insects or mold.

The biggest difference between scientific Chinese medicine and TCM is the convenience of consumption. While scientific Chinese medicine can be consumed directly based on practitioner’s recommended dose, TCM needs to be boiled with water, this however has some limitations as some components such as animal bones, minerals, and shellfish are hard and thick, thereby making the extraction of active ingredients difficult. Moreover, liquid extraction of TCM is time-consuming and labor-intensive.

Menstrual Cycles: The TCM Point of View

It always goes back to the same theory. The liver stores blood, regulates qi, the vital energy and controls smooth blood flow which is strongly influenced even during the monthly cycle. Any stress and negative emotions including anger may cause liver qi stagnation, thereby causing vital energy and blood flow to be impeded.

A typical complete menstrual cycle is 28 days long, though it may vary among individuals. Apart from the typical Bazhen Tang and Siwu Tang used in ancient times, Le Shenz offers an improved formula to complete your monthly health management during menstruation and post-menstruation, Shenz & Beauy.

You are seeing exceptionally high number of strands of hair on your hair brush, on the pillowcase, or in the shower drain, you got worried. It is not uncommon to encounter intermittent stress and anxiety in life, especially when one has pending workloads, commitment in relationships and expenses. As a result, the body react to it and led to problems like brittle nails, breakouts and hair loss.

Not only that stress and anxiety play a role in hair loss, it could also be caused by other conditions like:

Temporary Hair Loss

When one is experiencing a large amount of physical or emotional stress, it will push the hair follicles into resting phase so that they won’t produce new hair strands. Eventually, what you will see is hair falling out easily even if you are just touching, brushing or washing your hair. This condition is known as telogen effluvium. It is also attributed to poor diet and change in hormone levels.

Hair Pulling Disorder

This is a psychological condition known as trichotillomania. It causes people to have the compulsive decision to pull their hair from scalp, face and other parts of the body when they are feeling stressed or tensed.

Baldness, also known as alopecia areata, is an autoimmune condition where your body’s immune system will attack the hair follicles and cause the hair to fall out. In some cases, Alopecia areata can cause hair thinning while some may develop bald spots. While healthcare professionals are not exactly sure what causes alopecia areata, they think that genetics might play a role.

In short, stress is evitable if it is properly managed, make sure to get sufficient amount of sleep and spend some time doing leisure activities. At the same time, eating a balanced diet with vitamins and minerals is also essential to keeping the hair scalp healthy.

Author: Chan E-Lyn                   Uploaded Date: 7th February 2020

Have you ever experienced diarrhoea, bloated stomach or flatulence after drinking a glass of milk? These are just some of the signs and symptoms of a digestive disorder known as lactose intolerance. Usually, people with lactose intolerance do not make enough lactase, a milk enzyme that is used to digest natural sugars, lactose found in dairy products such as milk and yoghurt.

There are two types of lactose intolerance and they are of different causes.

     1. Primary lactose intolerance

A genetically determined absence or decrease in lactase production with age.

     2. Secondary lactose intolerance

Caused by intestinal mucosal disease due to inflammation in the gut wall which could lead to temporary decline in the production of lactase.

Depending on your lactose tolerance and how much lactose you have consumed, the severity of the symptoms vary accordingly.

Dairy products are highly nutritious and contain rich sources of protein, calcium and vitamins that are of a great combination for our bone and teeth health. Many people believe that being lactose intolerant generally means that they must stop consuming their favourite dairy products, but do you really have to give up on them? It is not always the case.

Author: Chan E-Lyn                   Uploaded Date: 20th January 2020

The pursuit of a youthful appearance has become one of the top priorities in today’s society. Many products in the market have claimed to be able to restore aging skin but they usually fall short.

One of the causes of the aging process is due to the presence of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that constantly seek for atoms or molecules to bond to. When this continues to happen, it will result in oxidative stress which could damage the body’s cells; thus, causes the symptoms of aging such as formation of wrinkles and atypical pigmentation. As such, the use of antioxidants have been an effective approach to minimize the damage caused by free radicals.

Studies have shown that berries are high in antioxidants which function to boost immunity and protect the health against cardiovascular diseases. For centuries, goji berries have remained as staple traditional Chinese medicine due to its wide range of medicinal and beauty properties. They have been traditionally used in ancient China to promote longevity by preventing tumor growth, lowering cholesterol, managing blood sugar and serving as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent.

How do Goji Berries Benefit the Skin?

Goji berries contain a rich source of antioxidant nutrients such as carotenoids, vitamin C, amino acids, polysaccharides and minerals, all of which are able to combat free radicals thereby maintaining a brighter and more youthful skin.

Carotenoids– A class of phytonutrients high in antioxidants which help to protect the skin barrier and combat against wrinkle-causing free radicals. Besides, the two major carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin are also beneficial in maintaining healthy vision.

Vitamin C– High concentration of vitamin C supports skin health by stimulating collagen synthesis. Moreover, vitamin C content in goji berries also aid in boosting the immune system thus protecting the body against flu and cold.

Polysaccharides– Complex carbohydrate molecules that possess antioxidant properties that are essential to retain moisture in the skin thus maintaining a youthful complexion.

Amino acids– Help to keep the skin hydrated and promote faster would healing.

Minerals– The essential dietary minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, zinc and selenium aid in keeping the skin firm.
